SAP EWM vs Classic WM — Can Classic WM Be Used in SAP S/4HANA?

February 25, 2026

As organizations transition to SAP S/4HANA, warehouse management strategy becomes a critical decision point. One of the most common questions we receive at SAP-VISTA is:

If SAP WM is still visible in S/4HANA configuration, can we use it for new warehouse implementations?

The short answer is No. While Classic Warehouse Management (LE-WM) may still appear in the system, it is not intended for new implementations. SAP’s strategic direction is clearly focused on Extended Warehouse Management (EWM).

This article explains why WM still appears in S/4HANA, what SAP officially supports, and how businesses should plan their warehouse future.

SAP’s Strategic Direction: Move to Extended WarehouseManagement (EWM)

SAP has positioned Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) as the future-ready warehouse solution for SAP S/4HANA environments.

Organizations implementing S/4HANA today should choose between

  • Embedded EWM — Integrated directly within S/4HANA
  • Decentralized EWM — Separate system for complex or large-scale operation

Both options provide advanced capabilities that go far beyond classic WM, including:

  • Advanced warehouse automation integration
  • Labor management
  • Slotting and re-arrangement
  • Real-time inventory visibility
  • Complex warehouse process orchestration

Why Do WM Configuration Nodes Still Appear in S/4HANA?

Many consultants and customers notice that WM IMG configuration nodes are still available in SAP S/4HANA, including recent releases such as S/4HANA 2023.

This often leads to confusion.

The reason is compatibility support, not future usage.

SAP retained these nodes under the Compatibility Scope /Compatibility Pack framework to support

  • System conversion (brownfield) customers
  • Temporary transition scenarios from ECC to S/4HANA
  • Existing WM customers who need time to migrate to EWM

Important Clarification: Maintenance Mode Only

Classic LE-WM in S/4HANA is:

✔ Technically available (forexisting customers)

✔ Supported for transition scenarios

❌ Not recommended for new implementations

❌ Not receiving functional innovations

❌ Planned for long-term phase-out

SAP has clearly stated that LE-WM is in maintenance mode. This means only critical corrections and legal updates are provided — no new features or strategic investments.

Greenfield vs Brownfield: What You Should Do

If You Are an Existing ECC Customer Using WM:

  • Temporary continuation in S/4HANA is allowed
  • Migration planning to EWM is strongly recommended

If You Are Planning a New S/4HANA Implementation(Greenfield):

  • LE-WM should NOT be implemented
  • EWM is the only strategic choice

Embedded vs Decentralized EWM — Which One Is Right?

Choosing the correct EWM deployment depends on factors such as

  • Warehouse complexity
  • Automation level
  • Transaction volume
  • System landscape strategy
  • Integration requirements
  • Future scalability

A proper architecture assessment is essential beforedeciding.

The Long-Term Reality: LE-WM Will Be Phased Out

Organizations that implement WM today risk:

  • Future migration costs
  • Technical limitations
  • Lack of innovation
  • Reduced SAP support scope

Moving directly to EWM avoids double investment and ensuresalignment with SAP’s roadmap.

How SAP-VISTA Can Help!

At SAP-VISTA, we help organizations:

✔ Evaluate current warehouseprocesses

✔ Define EWM architecture strategy

✔ Implement Embedded or Decentralized EWM

✔ Plan WM to EWM migration roadmaps

✔ Optimize warehouse performance on S/4HANA

Our goal is to ensure your warehouse landscape isfuture-proof, scalable, and SAP-aligned.

Conclusion

Although Classic Warehouse Management configuration may still appear in SAP S/4HANA due to compatibility provisions, it is not intended for new implementations.

SAP’s supported and future-ready warehouse solution is Extended Warehouse Management (EWM).

Organizations planning S/4HANA implementations should align with SAP’s roadmap and adopt EWM from the start to avoid future disruption.
